Embroidery Distortion – Causes and Solutions

Embroidery Distortion – Causes and Solutions

Daniel Horgan |

Embroidery distortion occurs when a design does not stitch out in the intended shape. For example, a circular design may appear oval once embroidered. This issue is fairly common and can be caused by several factors including the way the design is digitised, the stitching order and the type of backing used.

Stitching Order
The order in which a design is stitched has a significant impact on accuracy. Starting in the centre and working outward, then finishing with the outline, usually produces the best results. However, complex or multi colour designs may require a different sequence, sometimes beginning with the outline before filling in the centre.

Digitising Adjustments
Design adjustments such as reducing stitch density and using pull compensation can help reduce distortion. Pull compensation offsets the natural inward pull of thread during stitching. These adjustments should be tested to see if they improve the design outcome.

Backing Choice
One of the most important factors in preventing distortion is the type of backing used. Tear away backings, while convenient, can shift or break away during stitching, leading to design warping. A cut away backing provides stronger support in all directions and is much more stable. For best results, using two layers of cut away backing crossed at right angles can give maximum stability without affecting garment comfort.

ETC Supplies offers one of the UK’s widest ranges of embroidery backings, including lightweight tear away for temporary support and durable cut away options for maximum stability. Selecting the right product for the garment and design is key to achieving distortion free results.

Most embroidery distortion problems can be traced back to stitching order, digitising setup or insufficient backing. By carefully considering these factors and using high quality cut away backing from the ETC Supplies range, embroiderers can achieve consistent and accurate results.
